1. Multi-Tier Architecture Utilizing distinct layers separated into Virtual LAN’s has great security advantages. All outside network traffic is filtered at the firewall to allow only necessary services and their associated ports (usually HTTP and HTTPS on TCP port 80 and 443 respectively). This traffic is allowed to pass to the web server layer. The firewall then restricts web server communication to the application layer via specific ports and protocols. Similarly, the application layer may only communicate with the database layer via its associated rule set (i.e. ODBC).
This architecture forces an attacker to compromise each layer independently in order to reach the data stored in the database layer. Equally, it makes the inclusion of redundancy and High Availability (HA) a smoother process. Multi-tier architectures combined with database encryption (see above) ensure data privacy from the design level.

Clustering Server Clustering offers redundant hardware components and software that provides automatic fail over of hardware and content replication, ensuring that your applications are always available.
